Teachers at the Little School are committed to working with both children and their families and are dedicated to translating the school’s philosophy into practice. Teachers act as guides, extending the children’s thinking, setting reasonable limits on behavior, and helping each child develop a sense of initiative and self-discipline. Teachers act always with the recognition that it is primarily through the happy pursuit of their own interests and ideas that young children learn.

Every classroom has a Head Teacher and at least one Assistant Teacher. All Head Teachers must either have or be working toward a Masters Degree in education. Classroom staff is further supplemented by student teachers from Masters programs at Bank Street College Graduate School of Education and Columbia Teachers College, and from undergraduate programs at NYU, Pace, and BMCC. Part-time special education teachers are also often part of the classroom teams.
