Curriculum
In addition to their daily work with early childhood materials, the children in each classroom participate in a carefully planned social studies curriculum. Twos Program The 2s program is simply about the school experience itself. It is about learning to say goodbye to a caregiver in order to spend time with new adults and a peer group in a structured classroom environment. Threes Program The 3s study their own families, with a focus on different kinds of families and the ways in which family members help and support one another. Fours and Fours/Fives Program The 4s and 4s/5s learn about themselves. This involves the making of individual books that are both a record of the school year and a record of each child's experience of growing up. The books include artwork, dictation, photographs, and records of studies done as a class. The 4s and 4s/5s also do a range of studies on topics particular to each year's groups. In the past, classes have learned about food and cooking, seeds and planting, worms, eggs and chicks, and sewing and weaving. As they gather and share information, the children observe and record what they see using words, pictures and graphs. Children who do their kindergarten year the Little School are offered a gentle introduction to the formal study of letters and numbers, both through classroom curriculum and one-on-one work with an on-site reading specialist. |
